Friday's Highlights of the Pros in Action!

In the vault world, it's never too late to start!!!
Jenn Stuczynski, who prepped at Fredonia (NY) but never did the pole vault in high school and starred
in basketball early in her career at Roberts Wesleyan College, soared to a lifetime-best 15-05.00 to win
the women's competition at Friday night's elite division of the Pole Vault Summit.  Jeff Hartwig, who never
cleared even 15 feet as a prep at Howell HS in Missouri, won his fourth Summit crown on the men's side!
As yuo can see below, many of the top Americans were not national-class stars as high schoolers. On the
women's side, the vault really did not get its start on the HS scene until the mid-1990s, when some of
today's top female pros were either already finishing/finished HS or did not have the event available.

Men's Results
1. Jeff Hartwig 18 feet, 8.5 inches (5.70 meters) -- Attended Howell HS in Missouri, where he never cleared 15 feet!
2. Brad Walker 18-04.5 (5.60) -- Prepped at University HS in Washington, placing second at state as a senior!
3. Jacob Pauli 18-04.5 (5.60) --
4. Toby Stevenson 18-00.5 (5.50) -- Mr. Consistency at Permian HS, he cleared 16 feet-+ in every meet as a senior, with a best of 17-0
4. Tommy Skipper 18-00.5 (5.50)  -- Holds HS national record of 18-03.00 while at Sandy HS in Oregon!
6. Russ Buller 17-08.75 (5.40) -- Attended Westlake HS in Louisiana, where he went 17-00
7. Jon Takahashi 17-08.75 (5.40) -- Attended Grossmont HS in CA
8. Jeremy Scott 17-04.75 (5.30) --
8. Nick Hysong 17-04.75 (5.30) -- Achieved HS best of 17-04.75 while prepping at Tolleson HS, in Ariona in 1990!

Women's Results
1. Jenn Stuczynski  15 feet, 5 inches (4.70 meters)  -- did not compete in the PV in high school at Fredonia HS in NY!
2. April Steiner 15-01.00 (4.60) -- competed at Mountain View HS in Arizona; no marks of 13-01 or better in HS
3. Becky Holiday 14-05.25 (4.40) -- no marks of 13-01 or better in HS
4. Mary Sauer 14-05.25 (4.40) -- Only did the high jump and triple jump in high school (!), graduating from San Dimas HS in 1993
5. Lacy Janson 14-01.25 (4.30) -- attended Cardinal Mooney HS in FL, with a prep best of 13-02.00 in 2001
6. Nikki McEwen 14-01.25 (4.30) -- no marks of 13-01 or better in HS
7. Jillian Schwartz 13-09.25 (4.20) -- competed at Lake Forest HS in IL; no marks of 13-01 or better in HS
7. Tracy O’Hara 13-09.25 (4.20) -- competed at Rancho Bernardo HS in CA, with a prep best of 13-03.00 in 1998
9. Erica Bartolina 13-09.25 (4.20) -- no marks of 13-01 or better in HS
10. Chelsea Johnson 13-05.25 (4.10) -- competed at Atascadero HS in CA, with a prep best of 13-06.00 in 2002

***Thursday night's banquet festivities!***

The super popular "Pole Vault Summit" competition doesn't begin until Friday night (pros),
but the festivities began on Thursday as ex-Kingsburg HS star Melissa Price (at left in left
photo, alongside Fresno State coach and vault guru Bob Fraley) was inducted into the
Summit's Hall of Fame! Melissa was the true pioneer in the girls' vault, being the first
13-footer at the high school level when she turned the feat way back in 1995, when the
event was in its infancy for American female teens. At right, USATF women's vault chairman
Brian Yokoyama and Fresno State's Fraley pose with Pole Vault Summit keynote speaker
Steve Miller, a former track coach and one-time Nike high-ranking executive who has been
among the sport's most powerful and influential figures over the years. High school vault
competition is all day on Saturday and we'll bring you the highlights, results and interviews!

Early into each calendar year, the nation's best aerialists flock to the Nevada casinos and

'hog heaven' at the annual Pole Vault Summit, an indoor competition contested in the expansive
ballrooms of the host hotel. Light shows, thumping music and an appreciative crowd make this a big
favorite for all the competitors as they kick off the new year. The professionals vaulters (with the
likes of Stacy Dragila, Josh Hartwig, etc. competing in recent years) are at center stage (see above)
on Friday night, with high schoolers, collegians, Masters, and Open competitors in action on Saturday.

A quick look back to 2006 ....
Close calls in attacks on the HS national records

California's Scott Roth (left) and Georgia's Jordan Scott thrilled the crowd with each convincingly
sailing over 16-06 before taking three cracks at a national indoor record 17-07 height. Roth
appeared to successfully clear the historic height, but then the crossbar eventually trickled
off the pegs, leaving the record intact. Jordan Scott won the competition on fewer misses! In
the girls' competition, Indiana's
Katie Veith soared to a 14-00 clearance, the #2 indoor mark
in prep history and also a junior class national record! Veith is expected to return and would
be favored in 2007, while Arkansas' Spencel McCorkel and California's Casey Roche are
expected to vie for top male HS honor. Nico Weiler, a German foreign exchange student
now in California, has cleared in the 17's in training recently and could also be a factor.
